Candy Crush Soda Saga, often referred to as Candy Crush Soda or Candy Crush 2, is a video game developed and released by King. It is a sequel to the legendary Candy Crush Saga, the most popular world-widely known Facebook, iOS and Android game, and its the second variant of Candy Crush squels.
In June 2014, a soft launch of Candy Crush Soda Saga was released, just for some countries. Four months later, the game was globally released on Facebook. Around three weeks after the Facebook global release, it was officially released for all mobiles - Android and iOS.
In an article posted on King.com on March 3rd, 2017, the developers were planning to convert Flash into HTML5 to faster access and easier service.[1] That version of this game rolled out for all Facebook users on June 28 in the same year.
There are two different editions to the game: Flash and HTML5 (aka mobile or app). These editions differed considerably in game mechanics and appearance. The Facebook platform used Flash from its initial release in 2014 to 2017. The King.com version consistently used Flash until September 2020, not long before Flash itself reached EOL. However, as of March 31, 2022, along with Candy Crush Saga, this game will no longer be playable on King.com website.[2]
Currently, all platforms of the game use HTML5, based on the mobile version.
Difference from Candy Crush Soda Saga and Candy Crush Saga[]
There are a lot of changes to game mechanics and level design from Candy Crush Soda Saga and Candy Crush Saga. For more information, see here.
Gameplay[]
Just like other Candy Crush games, the game is a variation of "match-3" games, such as Bejeweled. Each level has a different shaped grid filled with candies of two to eight different colours (yellow, red, purple, blue, orange, cyan, black and green) and often obstacles (better known as blockers). The basic move of the game consists of swapping the positions of two candies to align sets of three of the same colour, whereupon they are crushed, causing candies above them to collapse into the space left behind, often resulting in chain reactions. Moves and alignments must be horizontal/vertical. The level's objectives must be met before the player runs out of moves.
Map[]
The game consists of approximately 12500+ of levels organized along a pathway on the map. The overall goal of the game is linear; players must pass previous levels to get access to later levels on the north end of the map.
Levels are organized into "Episodes" of 15 levels each, except for the first two episodes, Candy Town and Candy Factory, at ten each. Each episode has a background themed to a certain setting. However, as of January 1 2020, all episodes were removed and replaced with a rebuild of candy town that changes depending on the events occuring. Players only swipe left or right on the bottom of the level select screen to see more levels.
Various events are offered throughout the game, providing side quests and tournaments to enhance replay value and granting boosters to provide players a tactical advantage.

Levels and level types[]

In Candy Crush Soda Saga, there are nine level types exist in the game, but an eighth type was removed after introduction:
- Soda: First appeared at level 2. The player is given a set number of moves and must pop the certain amount of bottles to raise the soda level on the top of the board.
- Frosting: First appeared at level 1. The player is given a set number of moves and must find the certain amount of bears that was hidden by clearing frosting.
- Bubble: First appeared at level 16. The player is given a set number of moves and must get the certain mount of bears above the candy string. However in most levels the player must completely rely on bottles required to raise the soda level until it passed the candy string or no any bottles, then put the bears into the candy string.
- Chocolate: First appeared at level 76. The player is given a set number of moves and must clear all the chocolates on the board. If it isn't cleared at least one tile, the chocolate will grow back.
- Honey: First appeared at level 31. The player is given a set number of moves and must clear all the honey that contain any bears.
- Bubble Gum: First appeared at level 166. The player is given a set number of moves and must clear all the bubble gums on the board. Just like chocolate, if it isn't cleared at least one tile, the bubble gum will grow back or lock candies.
- Jam: First appeared at level 256. The player is given a set number of moves and must spread the jam all the whole board.
Fizz(Removed from the game when Gumdrop Acres was released): First appeared at level 481. The player is given a set number of moves and must collect a certain amount of bottle caps.- Sweet Escape: First appeared at level 630. The player is given a set number of moves and must free the bears by leading it to the portal on a path.
If the player succeeds in reaching the goal, the game does a "Soda Crush" (simply known as Sugar Crush), starting an automatic bonus round where the player's remaining moves are used to increase the score through creating various special candies on the board. If the player doesn't meet the goal of a level, a life is deducted. The player is given a default number of five lives, with each life restored after half an hour. The player has the option of asking friends for more lives, using gold to restore lives, or buying a special item that expands the number of lives the player has by default.
Interestingly, that makes Candy Crush Soda Saga with most number of different level types comparing other games made by King.
Mechanics[]
Special candies are created when combinations of four or more candies of the same colour are made.
- When four same-coloured candies are matched in a row, a striped candy is created. The orientation of the stripes depends on the way the four candies were aligned. When the striped candy itself is matched, it clears all of the candies in either a horizontal or vertical direction.
- When four or five same-coloured candies are matched in a square or in the letter "P" or "Q", a Candy Fish is created. If they are matched, they clear a candy or blockers at random from the board.
- When five same-coloured candies are matched in either an L, T, or a + shape formation, a wrapped candy is created. When this candy is matched, it explodes twice in a row, clearing a 3 by 3 box around itself each time.
- When five same-coloured candies are matched in a single line, a colour bomb is created. When this candy is swapped with any other candy, all candies of that colour are removed from the board.
- When six same-coloured candies are matched in a straight line of 5 with, at least, one candy adjacent to the middle (3rd) candy in the line, a Coloring Candy is created. When this candy is swapped with any other candy, it will burst and then spew out its coloring bubbles on all candies of another color that is dominant on the board, thereby coloring them into its color.
- When a striped candy and wrapped candy (of any colour) are swapped, a giant 3 by 3 striped candy is created. Upon creation, it moves in a horizontal direction and then in a vertical direction, clearing 3 rows and then 3 columns of candies.
- When a colour bomb and striped candy are swapped, all candies of the same colour as the striped one are, in turn, converted into striped candies, which detonate all at once.
- When a colour bomb and a wrapped candy are swapped, all candies of the same colour as the wrapped one are, in turn, converted into wrapped candies, which detonate all at once.
- When two striped candies are swapped (even if their stripes have the same direction), it clears a column and a row of candies.
- When two wrapped candies are swapped, the blast radius is doubled to form a 5 by 5 box around it.
- When two colour bombs are swapped, all of the blockers that currently has candy on it will be cleared a layer.
- When a colour bomb and a coloring candy are swapped, all of the blockers (except honey and bubblegum because it can only clear all the comb and locked bubblegum) that currently has candy on it will be cleared immediately.
- When two coloring candies are swapped, all candies on the board will change their color to match the color of the selected coloring candy.
Other various "boosters" can be purchased, such as the lollipop hammer, which can clear one candy from the board; the cross lollipop hammer, which can clear a column and a row of candies; the increased moves boosters, and more.
Blockers also appear in levels and act as obstacles. These include the unmatchable and resistant-to-special candies liquorice swirls, the expanding chocolate, and the cupcake that require multiple matches to eliminate. The board may also contain liquorice locks, ice and honey, which hold candies in "cages" that cannot be moved; said candies cannot be moved until they are matched.
